About Aprile Millo
Aprile Millo
“The beauty of the sound is paramount, and the phrasing is unfailingly gracious and elegant, but there is no lack of expression and communication with the audience. It's no surprise that her fans revere her as the upholder of vocal traditions and a successor to former bel canto heavyweights such as vocal heavyweights such as Renata Tebaldi and Rosa Ponselle.” Review of her 2018 London Recital Debut Opera Today Claire Seymour
The beloved soprano has for over thirty years been a beacon of style, authentic Verdi sound and idiomatic phrasing; the genuine article lirico-spinto soprano del agilita'. Her voice, “ruby rich and velvet” has been compared with some of the greatest voices who have ever lived, legendary sopranos, Renata Tebaldi, Zinka Milanov, with whom she studied, who became her great friend and mentors, Rosa Ponselle and Claudia Muzio, Magda Olivero and her great champion, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf who took her to Von Karajan and from that came a debut at La Scala.
Millo made a Cinderella-like debut in December, 1984 in Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra 1984 causing literally a sensation. “Birth of a New Verdi Star!” proclaimed the New York Times. In performances of a startling variety - from a prodigy to a prodigious artist capable of stunning versatility and golden age vocal glamour, Millo literally grew up in front of the world public in unforgettable nights of music and excitement. Millo has sung over 180 performances in her artistic home at the Metropolitan Opera. Millo would go on to acclaimed appearances in Vienna, Rome,Bologna, Verona, Paris, Berlin, Milan, Munich, Buenos Aires, Japan and Seville among the many world theaters where she is a popular favorite. Winner of by unanimous decision, The Voce Verdiane, The Francisco Vinas, The Maria Callas Foundation Award, and the Richard Tucker Award, NIAF Renata Tebaldi Award, The Claudia Muzio Award in Brazil and then in 2018 she entered into rarified territory when she was awarded the Verdi D’Oro in Italy, one of only 14 people to receive this prestigious award including, Renata Tebaldi, Luciano Pavarotti, Carlo Bergonzi, Placido Domingo, Piero Cappuccilli and the Chorus of La Scala to only name a few legendary singers.
Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo have been long time partners on stage unforgettable in the televised PBS Live From Lincoln Center: Great Performers Series for Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera with Pavarotti and Levine and the Emmy Winning Aida with Levine and Domingo. Miss Millo added to her repertoire with an acclaimed debut in the atmospheric Puccini masterpiece "Il Tabarro" with Maestro Donato Renzetti and a distinguished cast at the Historic Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa in 2014.
She was the voice of Elizabeth Taylor for Franco Zeffirelli’s “Young Toscanini”. They went on to become fast friends and she sang at Elizabeth’s wedding at Michael Jackson’s Never Never Land in front of a glittering group of world and political stars, that included Former First Lady Nancy Reagan, Merv Griffin and Zsa Zsa Gabor among hundreds of celebrities.
A legendary Verdi series for SONY Classical and The Metropolitan Opera with James Levine followed her best selling debut album with EMI with famed Italian maestro, Giuseppe Patane and the London Philarmonic. AIDA, DON CARLO, IL TROVATORE and LUISA MILLER with SONY.
Keenly aware of passing on the traditions to a new generation and sharing her voice and love for the divine world of opera Madame Millo gives Master Classes all over the world. This year she adds Spain and England to her master class schedule along with this rare opportunity in Vienna, Austria. She has a spring/summer academy in Italy and returns this year for her Operavision D’Oro program Città della Pieve-Florence-Busseto
Millo is a rare throwback to another age of singing. A voice of quality and extension, able to do Bel Canto, Verdi, as well as the demanding rigors of the Puccini and Verismo school.
